Why Api-Api & the Waterfront

Api-Api is the commercial and dining strip that runs along Kota Kinabalu’s waterfront, anchored by the reclaimed land where Waterfront Esplanade, Sabah International Convention Centre, and a run of malls and hotels now sit. It’s the most developed, densely packed stretch of the city — and where you’ll find KK’s famous sunsets over the South China Sea.

The Waterfront & Sunset Views

KK is known internationally for its sunsets, and the Waterfront/Esplanade area along Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens is the easiest place to catch one without leaving town. Head down in the late afternoon, grab a seat at one of the open-air restaurants or bars facing the sea, and watch the sky turn orange behind the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Park.

Tip: Sunset timing shifts through the year — roughly 6–6.30pm most of the year in KK. Arrive 30–45 minutes early to get a good seat at the popular spots.

Shopping & Malls

Api-Api is KK’s shopping core. Centre Point Sabah, Wisma Merdeka, Suria Sabah, and Imago Mall are all within a few minutes of each other, covering everything from local souvenirs and duty-free goods to international fashion brands and a cinema.

Handicraft Market (Filipino Market)

Right on the waterfront near Wisma Merdeka, this covered market is the place for Sabahan handicrafts, pearls, batik, and souvenirs — plus a lively seafood section if you want to buy fresh catch and have it cooked at an adjoining stall.

Where to Eat

The waterfront restaurants specialise in fresh seafood with a sea view — good for a splurge dinner. For something more casual, Api-Api’s back streets and the malls have a dense concentration of local and international food options, from Sabahan specialties to international chains.

Nightlife

This is also KK’s main nightlife strip, with bars and lounges along the Waterfront Esplanade drawing both locals and tourists after dark, especially on weekends.

Getting Around

Api-Api sits between the airport (roughly 15 minutes by car) and Gaya Street/city centre (a 10–15 minute walk or short drive), making it a convenient base if you want easy access to both shopping and the older parts of the city.
