KOTA KINABALU: AirAsia has expanded its Vietnam network with the introduction of a new direct route connecting Kota Kinabalu (BKI) to Ho Chi Minh City (SGN). The inaugural flight departed from Kota Kinabalu International Airport at 11:45 AM and arrived at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City at 12:55 PM, achieving an impressive 96% passenger load.
Later that same day, Fly AirAsia Flight AK1631 from Ho Chi Minh City landed in Kota Kinabalu at 4:25 PM, marking the official launch of the route. Passengers were given a warm Sabah welcome and garlanded by Sabah Tourism Board’s Deputy CEO, Tay Shu Lan, with a celebratory reception also attended by Tuan Roslan, Director of International Promotion (ASEAN), Ms. Haryanty, Director of Tourism Malaysia Sabah, and representatives from MABH and AirAsia.

The route will operate three times weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, offering travelers convenient access between Sabah and Vietnam.
This marks AirAsia Malaysia’s 16th international route from Kota Kinabalu, further solidifying the city as a regional aviation hub.
Strengthening Regional Connectivity
The launch aligns with Malaysia’s tourism goals, including a target of 27.3 million international tourist arrivals in 2024, as part of preparations for Visit Malaysia Year 2026. Similarly, Vietnam is working to attract 17-18 million international visitors this year, with this new route supporting both countries’ tourism aspirations.
Sabah’s Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Environment, Datuk Seri Christina Liew, hailed the route as a milestone in enhancing air connectivity in Southeast Asia.
“This new connection is a significant step in our efforts to expand Sabah’s reach within the ASEAN region. I commend AirAsia for their commitment to enhancing regional accessibility and supporting Sabah’s vision to be a top tourism destination in Southeast Asia,” she said.
Boost for Sabah and Vietnam Tourism
Sabah Tourism Board CEO Julinus Jeffery Jimit expressed optimism about the new route’s potential to attract Vietnamese travelers to Sabah.
“Ho Chi Minh City is already well-known among Sabahans, and this route opens the door for Vietnamese tourists to explore Sabah’s stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and growing interest in medical and wellness tourism,” he said.
AirAsia Aviation Group’s Chief Commercial Officer, Paul Carroll, emphasized the airline’s commitment to regional connectivity.
“This launch underscores our dedication to providing affordable, seamless travel while enhancing tourism and trade between Sabah and Vietnam. It supports regional economic growth and strengthens ties between these vibrant destinations,” he said.
Vietnam as a Key Connectivity Hub
AirAsia now operates 93 weekly flights to and from Vietnam, delivering over one million seats since 2023. This further establishes Vietnam as a critical hub for regional connectivity.
The new direct route offers a unique opportunity for travelers from both destinations to explore each other’s attractions. Sabah’s natural wonders, cultural diversity, and growing reputation in medical tourism, combined with Ho Chi Minh City’s vibrant urban charm, promise an enriching travel experience for all.
