Sabah Adopts Flexible Tourism Strategy Amid Flight Changes

Sabah is taking a more flexible and adaptive approach to its tourism strategy as global aviation conditions continue to shift.
According to Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin, the state is closely monitoring changes in airline operations and global travel trends, especially those affecting flights into Kota Kinabalu.
Recent developments have already impacted connectivity. Several flight routes to Kota Kinabalu have been temporarily suspended or reduced, including:
- AirAsia’s Singapore–Kota Kinabalu route (May 13 – Nov 30)
- Jakarta–Kota Kinabalu (April 16 – May 21)
- Ho Chi Minh City–Kota Kinabalu (from July 1)
- Batik Air’s Seoul–Kota Kinabalu route (effective April 28)
- Domestic routes such as Sibu–Kota Kinabalu and Bintulu–Kota Kinabalu (June 8 – June 30)
These changes reflect wider global challenges, including rising operational costs, geopolitical tensions, and shifting airline capacity.
📊 Tourism Still on Track — For Now
Despite these challenges, Sabah’s tourism sector remains resilient.
As of March 2026, the state recorded 932,970 visitor arrivals, including:
- 537,317 domestic visitors
- 395,653 international visitors
This puts Sabah on track towards its initial target of 4 million arrivals for 2026. However, officials say this target may be adjusted depending on how the aviation situation evolves.
🔍 Scenario-Based Planning in Action
To stay prepared, Sabah is using a scenario-based planning approach, which considers different possibilities such as:
- Continued global disruptions
- Stabilizing travel conditions
- Recovery in airline capacity
This strategy allows the state to respond quickly to changes and make informed decisions.
The Sabah Tourism Board (STB) plays a key role by gathering market insights, conducting research, and working closely with airline partners to improve connectivity.
🌏 Focus on Stronger Markets
Moving forward, Sabah will focus on strengthening tourism from domestic and regional markets that still have stable flight connections.
Efforts will include:
- Boosting promotions in key markets
- Maximizing existing flight routes
- Strengthening partnerships with airlines and industry players
Jafry emphasized that adaptability is key in the current environment:
“We must remain responsive and flexible as conditions continue to evolve.”
